This system allows patients who experience an unexpected accident or a life-threatening emergency that could result in serious complications without immediate treatment to receive emergency medical care at any medical institution authorized under Article 3 of the Medical Service Act. After receiving treatment, eligible patients may apply for reimbursement of medical expenses.
Unless there are unavoidable circumstances, the patient or guardian must notify the relevant local Veterans Affairs Office (Bohun-ji-cheong) within 14 days from the date of admission to the emergency room. If hospitalization is expected to exceed 14 days, an extension request must be submitted within that period to the same office.
Medical expenses for emergency treatment covered under the National Health Insurance Act, including both insured services and legally defined non-insured services.
Exceptions — Higher-grade room fees that may be covered by the government (excluding special suites)
After first paying the medical institution or pharmacy, the patient must submit the following documents to the relevant local Veterans Affairs Office to request reimbursement: Detailed statement of medical expenses, Receipt of payment (including prescription drug fees), Initial emergency room medical record, Confirmation of higher-grade room usage (if applicable).
