Overview of Designated Contracted Services

To enable persons of distinguished service to the state living in areas without a VHS Hospital or far from one to receive more convenient medical care, private hospitals are designated and operated as contracted (outsourced) hospitals.

  • State-supported soldiers or police officials wounded on active duty

All medical conditions
  • Medical expenses covered under the National Health Insurance Act
  • MRI, ultrasound, and 18 types of stomachics included among non-covered medical expenses
New registrants after July 1, 2012
  • Persons of distinguished service to the state with Disability Rating of 7
New registrants after June 23, 2016
  • A mild disability rating among persons suffering from actual or potential aftereffects of defoliants (including second-generation)
  • Disability ratings 12-14 among persons injured in the May 18 Democratization Movement
  • Disability rating 7 among persons injured while performing special missions

At designated contracted hospitals, patients may incur out-of-pocket expenses for items not covered under the program.

Treatment Period

Inpatient treatment is covered for up to 30 days (up to 90 days in long-term care hospitals)

If the treatment period is exceeded or the government-funded medical expenses exceed KRW 3 million, patients will, except under special circumstances, be transferred to a VHS Hospital.

Procedure for Accessing Contracted Hospitals

Please visit the designated contracted hospital and present your Veteran ID Card or Resident Registration Card to verify your eligibility as a government-funded patient before receiving medical treatment.
