When a patient suspected of having esophageal cancer visits the hospital, the Department of Gastroenterology performs an upper endoscopy to evaluate the condition of the esophagus, determine the presence of esophageal cancer, and conduct a biopsy for definitive diagnosis.
Once esophageal cancer is diagnosed, endoscopic ultrasonography, computed tomography (CT), and positron emission tomography (PET) scans are performed to determine the stage and extent of the disease.
Based on the patient’s condition and examination results, a multidisciplinary team discussion is conducted to determine the optimal treatment plan for esophageal cancer.
If surgery is determined to be the appropriate treatment, the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery conducts preoperative evaluations, performs the surgery, and provides postoperative care.
For early-stage esophageal cancer confined to mucosa or submucosa, the Department of Gastroenterology may perform endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD).
If the patient’s overall health condition is poor or the disease is too advanced for surgery, the Department of Medical Oncology administers chemotherapy, and/or the Department of Radiation Oncology provides radiation therapy.
The Esophageal Cancer Center at the VHS Medical Center strives to provide accurate and effective diagnosis, treatment, and post-treatment care through multidisciplinary consultations involving specialists from Gastroenterology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Pathology, Radiology, and Nuclear Medicine.
