In recent years, the incidence of thyroid cancer in South Korea has increased significantly, making it the most common cancer overall. It occurs three times more frequently in women, ranking second among female cancers.
The extent of surgery is determined based on the patient’s age, tumor size, invasion into surrounding tissues, and the extent of metastasis. The VHS Medical Center also has extensive surgical experience in advanced thyroid cancer.
At the Head and Neck Cancer & Thyroid Cancer Center, specialists in Otorhinolaryngology, Hematology & Medical Oncology, Endocrinology, Radiation Oncology, and Radiology—each
with extensive clinical experience and expertise—collaborate closely to ensure accurate and timely diagnosis
and complete tumor removal.
Patients visiting the Head and Neck Cancer & Thyroid Cancer Center at the VHS Medical Center undergo the following clinical care process:
First, a biopsy of the lesion is performed to confirm the diagnosis. The biopsy procedure varies depending on the type and location of the lesion.
Once a cancer diagnosis is confirmed, various imaging studies are performed for accurate staging, and, if necessary, these tests may be conducted during hospital admission to expedite diagnosis. After all evaluations are complete, the optimal treatment plan is determined through consultation with the patient and their family, in collaboration with specialists in Otorhinolaryngology, Hematology & Medical Oncology, and Radiation Oncology.
Potential speech and swallowing difficulties following treatment are addressed through speech therapy and swallowing rehabilitation to minimize complications. After treatment, regular follow-up examinations are conducted to monitor progress and continuously assess for recurrence.
Our team of medical professionals with extensive experience in head and neck and thyroid cancers strives to provide optimal treatment and promote rapid postoperative recovery based on their experience with elderly patients.
Video endoscopes, laryngeal stroboscopes, and advanced imaging devices allow the location and extent of the disease to be assessed immediately, reducing both time and financial burden while enhancing patient satisfaction and trust. In addition, voice assessment equipment has been introduced to provide treatment for voice disorders.
Through close multidisciplinary collaboration among specialists in Otorhinolaryngology, Endocrinology, Radiology, and Nuclear Medicine, each patient receives the necessary examinations and treatments. Regular case discussions are held to ensure early diagnosis, determine appropriate treatment strategies, monitor for recurrence, and manage recurrent disease.
