In South Korea, colorectal cancer has the second highest incidence (third among men and third among women) and is the third leading cause of cancer-related death.
Due to the westernization of dietary habits and an aging population, the number of patients has been increasing every year.
Colorectal cancer requires varied diagnostic and therapeutic approaches depending on the tumor’s location, stage, and the patient’s condition, and treatment methods that consider postoperative quality of life have also been developed.
The medical team at the VHS Medical Center is composed of colorectal surgeons, gastroenterologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, nuclear medicine specialists, pathologists, and oncology nurse specialists, all of whom possess extensive clinical experience and professional expertise in the treatment of colorectal cancer.
By establishing a multidisciplinary collaboration system, we provide the most effective personalized treatment for each patient through prompt, accurate diagnosis and comprehensive management of colorectal cancer.
We provide the most appropriate treatment for each patient by selecting from various techniques, including endoscopic treatment for early colorectal cancer, transanal excision, open and laparoscopic surgery for advanced colorectal cancer, single-port laparoscopic surgery, and minimally invasive robotic procedures. Depending on the stage and location of the colorectal cancer, we administer preoperative and postoperative chemoradiation therapy, as well as palliative chemotherapy.
When patients visit the Cancer Center for the first time, consultations with specialists and oncology nurse specialists help schedule the necessary tests quickly for diagnosis, establishing a system that enables patients to receive treatment promptly.
The treatment of colorectal cancer is determined by various factors, including the stage of the disease, tumor location, and the patient’s overall condition. Therefore, the most effective treatment method varies for each individual. To provide optimal treatment, a multidisciplinary team composed of specialists in colorectal surgery, gastroenterology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, nuclear medicine, and pathology holds regular collaborative patient care.

Patients at the VHS Medical Center tend to be older compared to those at other hospitals. Elderly patients often have multiple underlying conditions, making perioperative management and dietary regulation especially important. We strive to promote rapid postoperative recovery and improve quality of life through dietary education, anorectal function tests, and biofeedback therapy.
