In South Korea, the incidence of liver cancer ranks fifth among men and eighth among women, and the
overall mortality rate from liver cancer ranks second.
However, with recent advances in various
treatments for liver cancer, patient outcomes are gradually improving.
In addition, we provide
optimized treatments for malignant tumors of the bile ducts and pancreas, including diagnosis,
surgery, perioperative chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.
Generally, malignant tumors of the bile ducts and pancreas have a less favorable prognosis compared
to cancers of other organs.
However, with improvements in imaging accuracy and advances in
surgical techniques, resection rates have increased, and the incidence of postoperative
complications has decreased.
Furthermore, advances in adjuvant therapies and radiation treatment
methods have steadily improved outcomes after surgery, though progress has been gradual.
The medical team at the VHS Medical Center is composed of specialists in gastroenterology,
medical oncology, hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, radiation oncology, radiology, and
pathology, all with extensive clinical experience and expertise in malignant tumors of the
liver, bile ducts, and pancreas. These specialists collaborate closely in a
patient-centered, coordinated system from diagnosis to treatment, working together with
exceptional teamwork to provide rapid diagnosis and the most appropriate individualized care for
each patient.
Notably, our center has extensive clinical expertise in managing elderly patients
with multiple underlying conditions, enabling the delivery of safer and more effective treatment
strategies.
For liver cancer, surgical liver resection is performed, along with local treatments such as radiofrequency ablation, microwave ablation, and transcatheter arterial chemoembolization. Depending on the case, systemic chemotherapy and radiation therapy may also be used, either alone or in combination.
For bile duct and pancreatic cancers, our team includes medical professionals with extensive clinical experience and expertise in these cancers. Through close collaboration and discussion among the specialists, an integrated approach is used to determine the most appropriate diagnosis and treatment for each patient.
When patients visit the Cancer Center for the first time, consultations with specialists and oncology nurse specialists help schedule the necessary tests quickly for diagnosis, establishing a system that enables patients to receive treatment promptly.
Treatment for liver, bile duct, and pancreatic cancers is determined not only by the stage of the cancer, but also by factors such as the patient’s age, liver function, tumor location, and the presence of other comorbidities. Therefore, the most effective treatment method varies for each individual. For liver cancer patients with complex treatment needs, a multidisciplinary team of gastroenterologists, surgeons, radiologists, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, and pathologists holds regular collaborative consultations to determine the optimal treatment for each patient.

Provides Best Possible Treatment
Most liver cancer patients also have coexisting liver cirrhosis. Therefore, it is essential not only to treat liver cancer but also to carefully manage liver cirrhosis and its related complications to achieve the best treatment outcomes. In addition, to address issues that may arise after surgery for bile duct and pancreatic cancers, our specialized medical team provides systematic, comprehensive follow-up care through regular outpatient visits.
