History and Key Activities

Assistive devices are not just about technology; they are about compassion.
The history of the Prosthetics & Orthotics Center at the VHS Medical Center is also the history of assistive devices.

1964 ~ 2000
  • Jan. 1964 Established the Prosthetics Factory of the National Rehabilitation Center under the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (Suwon)
  • Jan. 1970 Transferred to the National Veterans Hospital (renamed Prosthetics Workshop)
  • Nov. 1981 Reorganized under the Korea Veterans Welfare Corporation as the Prosthetics Workshop of the Korea Veterans Hospital
  • May. 1985 Opened the Busan Branch Prosthetics Workshop within VHS Busan Hospital
  • May. 1987 Opened the Gwangju Branch Prosthetics Workshop within VHS Gwangju Hospital
  • Aug. 1989 Opened the Daegu Branch Prosthetics Workshop within VHS Daegu Hospital
  • Sep. 1989 Opened the Daejeon Branch Prosthetics Workshop within VHS Daejeon Hospital
  • Nov. 1991 Constructed a new VHS Seoul Hospital Prosthetics Workshop
2001 ~ 2010
  • Feb. 2001 Renamed Prosthetics Workshop to Assistive Device Center, and Branch Prosthetics Workshops to Branch Offices
  • Sep. 2008 Temporarily relocated to the 6th floor of the Rehabilitation Center
2010 ~ 2020
  • Feb. 2013 Relocated to the 1st floor of Main Building (Building 3)
  • 2015 Successfully supported the military return of two non-commissioned officers who lost their legs in the DMZ landmine explosion
  • 2016 Won a bronze medal in the Prosthetics and Orthotics category at the International Abilympics
    (Mr. Shim Wu-seob, Prosthetist/Orthotist)
  • 2018 Supplied the first assistive devices using 3D printing technology (aesthetic covers, hand, and finger prostheses)
  • 2019 Began providing assistive device services at VHS Incheon Hospital
    ① Danger Detection Device and Method for Electric Wheelchairs (Patent No. 10-1977681)
    ② Lumbosacral Orthosis (Patent No. 10-2017525)
  • 2020 Opened the Wheelchair Sharing & Happiness Center
    Secured three national research projects (including clinical trials and consulting for orthopedic and rehabilitation medical devices)
2021 ~ 2022
  • 2021 Opened the 3D Printing Center
    Secured two national research projects
    (including the establishment of an intelligent prosthetics and orthotics track record and clinical validation)
  • 2022 Secured one national research project
    (development of a hydraulic prosthetic leg for individuals with above-knee amputations)
