About the Research Team

Welcome to the Biobank at the Veterans Medical Research Institute.

We systematically collect, store, and manage human-derived materials such as tissues, cells, and blood from patients, and ethically and fairly distribute them to researchers. This enables future research that utilizes genetic information technologies and establishes a foundation for providing patients with high-quality, personalized precision medical services.

    Lead Data-Driven Precision Medicine

Establishment of the Biobank, Veterans Medical Research Institute

Direction for Biobank Establishment

Build infrastructure that simultaneously secures the value chain of human-derived materials and information, leveraging South Korea’s exclusive strengths in veteran medical research to serve as a precision medicine hub for chronic diseases, cancer, and rare diseases affecting veterans.

Direction for Biobank Establishment

1. Overcome Challenges in Precision Medicine Research Infrastructure

  • Market focused on sequencing services

Increasing dependence on a single company

  • Diversity in genomic research interpretation

    Inability to provide one-stop services

  • Difficulty in securing available human resources

Lack of human resources suitable for veterans’ medical research

Leverage the Potential of VHS Medical Center

  • Veterans’ medical hub hospital

Continuous care from youth to older adulthood and seniors

  • Basic and clinical research capabilities

    Expert group in veteran medicine

2. Direction for the Institute’s Development

  • Establishment of high-quality, highly reliable infrastructure
    • Establish an international standard
    • curation system and develop
    • high-value data businesses
  • Identify strategic policy needs
    • Secure national project collaborations
    • and develop veteran medicine policies
  • Sustainable operations
    • Resource/information collaborative research,
    • unit and integrated analysis, and strengthen
