In March 2018, the VHS Medical Center established a Medical Ethics Committee and has since been participating in the implementation of the Life-Sustaining Treatment Decision System by assessing patients in the end-of-life process, verifying patients’ intentions, and carrying out the withholding or withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment, thereby upholding and respecting patients’ right to self-determination.
The committee is composed of one chairperson and fifteen members, including experts from various fields such as medicine, ethics, and law. They deliberate and provide consultation on medical ethics issues related to decisions and implementation of the withdrawal or withholding of life-sustaining treatment and make recommendations based on their determinations.
