Hospice Volunteers

Hospice volunteers provide care in various areas—such as physical, psychological, spiritual, and bereavement support—according to their own aptitudes and abilities. They engage in activities that help improve the quality of life of terminally ill patients and their families through the provision of care.

Qualifications of Hospice Volunteers

  • Individuals who have completed hospice volunteer training at this institution or another certified hospice organization
  • Individuals who are available for at least six months
  • Individuals who have experienced bereavement and for whom at least one year has passed since the loss

Not eligible for hospice volunteer selection

  • Those who have experienced the loss of a close family member within the past year
  • Those who wish to volunteer for the purpose of promoting a particular religion
  • Individuals currently undergoing cancer treatment
  • Those who wish to volunteer out of curiosity about death

Hospice Volunteer Application Process

  • STEP 01Completion of training

  • STEP 02Application (in-person or via phone consultation)

  • STEP 03Practicum and interview

  • STEP 04Volunteer activities

Qualities of a Hospice Volunteer

  • Maturity and emotional stability
  • A positive outlook on life and death
  • The ability to listen attentively and respect others’ values
  • Deep compassion and a caring spirit
  • Reliability in maintaining confidentiality and honoring commitments
  • Warmth, cooperation, and an inclusive attitude

Hospice Volunteer Activities

  • Physical care: Foot massage, bathing assistance, hair washing, and personal grooming
  • Psychological care: Conversations and walks
  • Spiritual care: Prayers and spiritual conversations
  • Bereavement care: Comfort calls and assisting with bereavement support gatherings
  • Care program support: Assistance in social welfare programs and wish fulfillment activities
  • Other support: Promotional events, educational programs, and administrative tasks
  • Talent donation: Photography, musical performance, etc.
  • Home-based hospice care: Visiting patients at home to provide hospice care services
