The Hospice and Palliative Care Unit at the VHS Medical Center was established in 1999 and has since provided the highest quality medical and welfare services to improve the quality of life life of persons of distinguished service to the state in need of hospice and palliative care.

With the fundamental philosophy of providing compassionate care to relieve the suffering of terminal cancer patients and help them face the end of life with comfort and dignity, we have fulfilled our mission as a nationally designated public medical institution by upholding the values of public healthcare.

In 2015, the Ministry of Health and Welfare designated the center as a specialized hospice and palliative care institution. Following the enforcement of the Act on Hospice and Palliative Care and Decisions on Life-Sustaining Treatment for Patients at the End of Life, it was re-designated as a specialized hospice institution in 2018. In 2017, the center was designated as a Regional Hospice Center and has since been actively conducting a wide range of activities, including hospice and palliative care programs, education and outreach, and research.

The VHS Medical Center’s specialized hospice and palliative care ward currently operates 28 beds and, through a multidisciplinary team approach, actively manages pain and physical symptoms while providing psychological, social, and spiritual support to patients and their families—striving to enhance overall and holistic quality of life. In addition, we actively provide care by diversifying home-based and consultative hospice and palliative care services and collaborating with other institutions, thereby expanding opportunities for patients to access hospice services.

Going forward, the Hospice and Palliative Care Center at the VHS Medical Center will continue to provide optimal medical and welfare services, accompanying patients and their families on the final journey of life, and will strive to deliver high-quality palliative care while continuously improving service standards.
